BRAKES - ANTI-LOCK - INDICATOR LIGHT

STAYS ON TOO LONG AND/OR COMES ON

INTERMITTENTLY 87-17-4

FORD: 1987 THUNDERBIRD

ISSUE: The "anti-lock brake" light on 1987 Thunderbird Turbo Coupes may come on intermittently and/or stay on too long after engine start-up. This may be caused by a misrouted high tension ignition coil wire that touches or passes too close to the anti-lock master cylinder. A service code 21 may or may not be displayed. The performance of the antilock brake system is not affected by this condition.

ACTION: To correct this, properly route the high tension ignition coil wire using the following service procedure.

Figure 3:

1. Route the coil wire to exit the coils shield in a downward direction from the bottom forward corner, Figure 3.

NOTE: The coil shield has the forward corner cut out to allow the coil wire to exit at this point.

2. Bend the coil wire toward the distributor and route it over or under the power steering hose.

3. After completing Steps 1 and 2, start the engine and check if the "anti-lock" light turns off. The "anti-lock" light should turn off within six (6) seconds after engine start with the booster fully charged. If the "anti-lock" light stays on too long, refer to the 1987 Car Shop Manual, Volume B, Section 12-32 for further diagnosis.
