LAMP - WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID WARNING INDICATOR INOPERATIVE - VEHICLES BUILT FROM 11/01/86 TO 6/03/87
FORD: 1987 MUSTANG

ISSUE: An inoperative windshield washer low fluid warning indicator lamp on 1987 Mustang GT's may be caused by the wire harness for the windshield washer reservoir sensor.

ACTION: To correct this, check to see if the vehicle needs a jumper wire harness installed by using the following service procedure.

1. Remove the coil cover.

FIGURE 3:

2. Carefully cut the woven fiber insulation covering the windshield washer reservoir wire harness, Figure 3.
3. Inspect the wire harness for the presence of a red/yellow wire. If the red/yellow wire is present, normal diagnostics as outlined in the Shop Manual. If the red/yellow is missing, proceed to Step 4.

4. Remove the left front tire and wheel assembly and fender splash shield.

NOTE: The windshield washer reservoir does not need to be removed to perform this procedure.

5. Disconnect the rectangular connector from the windshield washer reservoir sensor.
6. Connect the rectangular connector disconnected in Step 5 to the connector on the jumper harness, E7ZZ-17A622-A, with the single yellow wire.

7. Connect the jumper harness connector with the blue wire and yellow wire to the windshield washer reservoir sensor.

8. Route the remaining connectors on the jumper harness through the windshield washer reservoir access hole in the left fender apron. Continue to route the jumper harness along the top of the fender toward the dash panel so it may be connected to the engine compartment lamp connector.

9. Disconnect the engine compartment lamp connector.

10. Connect the jumper harness connector with the orange wire to the 14401 wire harness and then connect the other jumper harness connector with the blue wire and orange wire to the engine compartment lamp connector.

NOTE: Make sure there is enough slack in the jumper harness to allow movement when the hood is opened.

11. Secure the jumper harness to the existing wire harness along the left fender apron with tie straps, 95874-S.

12. Make sure the system operates correctly by performing the following:

a. Make sure the fluid level in the windshield washer reservoir is low.

b. Turn the ignition key to the "RUN" position. The indicator lamp will test itself for a couple of seconds then turn off. The low fluid indicator should light after about 20 seconds.

13. Refill the windshield washer reservoir with washer fluid.
