^ NOISE - "RATTLE" - CONVERTIBLE TOP TACK STRIP

FORD: 1987 MUSTANG

ISSUE: A "rattle" from the rear seat area on 1987 Mustang Convertibles may be caused by loose retaining nuts that hold the tack strip to the studs on the vehicle body.

ACTION: To correct this, remove the loose retaining nuts and apply Ford Threadlock using the following service procedure.

1. Remove the two (2) screws on both sides of tack strip top well cover.

NOTE: It is not necessary to remove screws retaining top well cover to rear seat back support.

2. Check to see if retaining nuts holding tack strip to studs are tight, refer to Section 47-07, pages 19-21 of the 1987 Car Shop Manual. The nuts should be torqued to 12 ft.lbs. (16 N-m).

3. If nuts are loose, remove one (1) at a time and put one (1) or two (2) drops of Ford Threadlock and Sealer (EOAZ-19554-AA), or equivalent, on threads of stud.

4. Tighten nut to 12 ft.lbs. (16 N-m).

5. Continue with this procedure, removing one (1) nut at a time, until all nuts and studs have an application of Threadlock and are torqued to 12 ft.lbs. (16 N-m).

6. Reinstall retaining screws on both sides of the tack strip top well cover.
