Installation

INSTALLATION

1. Clean the oil pan and inspect for damage.
2. Clean the oil pan gasket surface on the cylinder block.
3. Apply gasket sealer to gasket mating surfaces and install oil pan gaskets.
4. With oil pump and pickup tube assembly positioned in the oil pan, install oil pump and then install oil pan. Tighten oil pan bolts to specification.
5. Lower engine onto engine insulators, install engine mount-to-No. 2 crossmember attaching bolts or nuts and tighten to 108-144 Nm (80-106 lb-ft). On Thunderbird/Cougar tighten to 45-61 N m (33-45 lb ft).
6. Position steering gear and install retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to specification.
7. Install rear cover plate.
8. Install rear cover plate and tighten bolts to specification.
9. Position transmission to vehicle with a suitable transmission jack, install attaching bolts and tighten to specification.
10. Install torque converter to flywheel attaching bolts and tighten to specification.
11. Position converter housing to engine and install attaching bolts. Tighten bolts to specification.
12. Install the starter motor and reconnect electrical connections.
13. Connect transmission oil cooler lines.
14. Connect neutral start switch wire to transmission.
15. Install speedometer cable to transmission.
16. Position transmission case brace to left hand cylinder block and install attaching bolts.
17. Connect gear shift bellcrank lever to transmission.
18. Connect transmission control shaft.
19. Install flywheel housing cover.
20. Install rear insulator and tighten to specification. Install No.3 crossmember and tighten attaching bolts to specification.
21. Install gear selector valve rod.
22. Install exhaust catalyst converter.
23. Install muffler inlet pipes.
24. Install driveshaft and tighten attaching bolts to specification.
25. Partially lower vehicle.
26. Position fan shroud in place, install attaching screws, and tighten to specifications.
27. Install oil level indicator to side of oil sump.
28. Connect battery ground cable.
29. Fill crankcase with oil and transmission with transmission fluid to the specified levels.
30. Install air cleaner assembly.
31. Apply parking brake and while holding foot on brake, start engine and allow to run for a few minutes.
32. Turn engine off and check for oil or fluid leaks.
33. Lower vehicle fully and remove fender covers.
34. Close hood.
