WHEELS - CAST ALUMINUM - PAINT SERVICE
FORD 1984 THUNDERBIRD FILA SERIES
The 1984 Thunderbird Fila Series vehicles are equipped with painted cast aluminum wheels. The paint used on these wheels is Light Pastel Charcoal, code 1M which was previously used as body color on many 1983 models.
In the event of minor paint damage where bare metal is not exposed, the paint can be serviced with Ford touchup paint, Code 1M-AL81-5683-B, Brush (1/2 oz.) or AL81-5683-H, Spray Can (5 oz.).
If the damage has exposed the metal, additional steps are required.
1. Clean the surface with wax and grease remover.
2. Sand all loose paint from the wheel.
3. Sand bare aluminum and undamaged paint with 400 sandpaper.
4. Clean the surface again with wax and grease remover.
5. Spray 2 thin coats of Zinc Phosphate, such as R-M 834 or equivalent, following label instructions on the container.
NOTE: If using Zinc Phosphate material without an acid metal prep additive, it is necessary to metal prep the bare metal before applying the Zinc Phosphate.
6. Apply the color coat.
