Idle Control Diaphragm - Stalls/Surge/Uneven Idle

83ford5 Article No. 83-24-16

STALLS AND SURGE, UNEVEN IDLE - METHANOL FUELED

FORD 1983 ESCORT (METHANOL FUELED)

The idle control diaphragm is not intended to be operational on methanol fueled Escort vehicles. If operational, stalls/surge and uneven idle may result. The diaphragm control requires replumbing to remove its function from the system.

Figure 30:

^ Remove the diaphragm hose 9E455 (YB) and cap the gold/black 12A189 spark delay valve with a 5/32" vacuum cap (Figure 30).

Figure 31:

^ Verify initial ignition timing (See Specifications Figure 31).
^ Verify 2500 RPM ignition timing (See Specifications Figure 31).
^ Verify 5000 RPM ignition timing (See Specifications Figure 31).
NOTE: If the distributor vacuum diaphragm requires adjustment, use a 1/8" Allen wrench through the vacuum port. Due to the assembly process, initial adjustment may be difficult and may require over-adjustment followed by a second adjustment. It is extremely important not to exceed the 5000 RPM-47~ BTDC maximum and the 2500 RPM-43~ BTDC maximum for normal driving conditions. In the event you cannot set to these specifications, the distributor should be replaced in order to avoid engine damage or poor driveability.
Approximately 3/4~ per turn of the vacuum diaphragm Allen adjustment is considered normal. To reduce spark advance, turn the Allen wrench counterclockwise.

^ On completion of the Timing Check or Reset, adjust the idle RPM to the attached settings, using the idle screw that contacts the vacuum diaphragm. If not enough adjustment is available, back off the closed throttle adjustment on the opposite end of the throttle shaft 1 and 2 turns and continue adjustment with the diaphragm screw.
^ On completion of the Idle Reset, connect a dampened vacuum gage to a Manifold Vacuum Source and adjust the Idle Fuel/Air Screw to achieve maximum
vacuum. (See Methanol Shop Manual).
^ Recheck Idle RPM settings.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
