Fuel Pump: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

Fig. 105 Fuel Pump Removal:





Remove fuel pump in numbered sequence, Fig.105, noting the following:





1. Relieve fuel system pressure as follows:
a. Disconnect fuel pump harness connector at fuel tank.
b. Start engine and let it run until it stalls, then turn ignition switch to off.
c. Disconnect battery ground cable.
d. Reconnect fuel pump harness connector.
2. Remove fuel from fuel tank into a suitable container.
3. Cover fuel line connection with rags to prevent spraying of fuel when disconnecting high pressure fuel line.
4. Loosen the two self-locking nuts (3) to the end of the stud bolt.
5. After disconnecting the lateral rod and body (5), lower the lateral rod and suspend from axle beam using a piece of wire.

INSTALLATION

Reverse removal procedure to install, noting the following:

1. Install [1][2]overfill limiter in the direction as shown, Fig.106

2. When installing fuel gauge unit, align the two positioning projections as shown, Fig.107. Ensure bend in float assembly is pointed to left during installation.
3. When installing fuel pump, O-ring and attaching bolt, proceed as follows:
a. Align three positioning projections of packing with holes in fuel pump.
b. Install lowest holding bolt first. Ensure O-ring is not pinched.
4. Tighten self-locking nuts until rear end of tank band contacts body.
