Component Tests and General Diagnostics

CALIFORNIA VEHICLES ONLY

EGR Solenoid Circuit:

Testing The EGR Control Solenoid Valve:

COMPONENT TEST:
1. Disconnect the vacuum hose(s) from the solenoid valve.
2. Disconnect the electrical harness connector.
3. Connect a hand vacuum pump to the vacuum hose nipple.
4. Connect jumper leads to the solenoid terminals.

EGR Control Solenoid Valve Voltage Test:

5. While applying vacuum to the solenoid, apply battery voltage directly to the solenoid terminals.
Vacuum should HOLD.

6. Discontinue voltage.
Vacuum should LEAK.

EGR Control Solenoid Valve Resistance Check:

7. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the solenoid valve.
Refer to SPECIFICATIONS/ELECTRICAL.

HARNESS TEST:

1. Disconnect the EGR solenoid harness connector.
2. Using a voltmeter, measure the power supply voltage between terminal 1 of the EGR Solenoid connector and ground.

Voltage:
Battery voltage.

3. Disconnect the Engine Control Module harness connector.
4. Using an ohmmeter, check for an open wire between the EGR Solenoid connector terminal 2 and the ECM connector terminal 53.
5. Check for a short to ground from the EGR solenoid harness connector terminal 2, or Engine Control Module harness connector terminal 53.

Continuity:
Should not exist

If any of the previous tests produce unsatisfactory results, the harness will need to be repaired or replaced. Once repairs have been completed, clear the trouble codes and road test the vehicle to confirm that the repair has corrected the problem and the code doesn't return.

If the same trouble code reoccurs, it is possible that there is an intermittent failure of the component or the ECM. Check for looseness at all harness junctions and test for an intermittent failure.
