Fluid Drain and Refill

The only fluid recommended for use in the ZF-4 transaxle is Mercon automatic transmission fluid.
CAUTION: Do not use any other type of fluid.
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove underbody splash shield.
3. Loosen fill tube to oil pan attaching nut and drain fluid. Disconnect fill tube from pan.
4. Remove oil pan retaining clamp attaching nuts, then remove retaining clamps and oil pan.
5. Remove oil screen cover bolts, and cover.
6. Remove oil screen and cover gasket. Clean oil pan, magnet and screen, replace screen if necessary.
7. Install new O-ring on oil screen. Coat new oil screen cover gasket with petroleum jelly, then install on valve body. Install screen, pressing tabs (Q) into valve body as shown in Fig. 2.
8. Install oil screen cover, ensuring oil screen and cover gasket are aligned. Install cover bolts finger tight, referring to bolt length as shown in Fig. 3. Torque M5 bolts to 45 lb-in, and M6 bolts to 72 lb-in.
9. Install magnet in oil pan, ensuring it is seated in indentation in pan.
10. Install new gasket on oil pan, then position pan on case. Install pan retaining clamps and attaching nuts on mounting studs. Torque clamp nuts to 54 lb-in.
11. Connect fill tube and attaching nut to oil pan. Torque nut to 74 lb-ft.
12. Install underbody splash shield and lower vehicle.
13. Remove transaxle dipstick and add 2 1/4 quarts of Mercon automatic transmission fluid through fill tube. Check and adjust fluid level as necessary.
