Valve Clearance: Adjustments

NOTE: Cylinders on this engine are numbered from rear to front, with No. 1 cylinder located at the flywheel end.
1. Remove cylinder head cover.

Fig. 5 Camshaft Sprocket Front Timing Mark:

2. Rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction, until camshaft sprocket timing mark is aligned with front timing belt cover pointer (A), Fig. 5. Ensure timing mark is for No. 1 cylinder TDC, not No. 4 cylinder.

Fig. 6 Camshaft Sprocket Rear Timing Mark:

3. Rotate crankshaft sprocket clockwise until first mark on rear of camshaft sprocket is aligned with pointer on rear timing belt cover (B), Fig. 6.

Fig. 7 Checking Rocker Arm To Valve Stem Alignment:

4. Check and adjust valve clearance for No. 2 cylinder intake and No. 4 cylinder exhaust valves. When adjusting valves, ensure adjusting screw (C) is properly aligned with valve stem (D), Fig. 7. If not, check rocker arm and adjusting screw for damage and wear and replace as necessary.
5. Rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction until the second mark on rear of camshaft sprocket is aligned with pointer on rear timing belt cover. Check and adjust valve clearance for No. 1 cylinder intake and No. 2 cylinder exhaust valves.
6. Rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction until the third mark on rear of camshaft sprocket is aligned with pointer on rear timing belt cover. Check and adjust valve clearance for No. 3 cylinder intake and No. 1 cylinder exhaust valves.
7. Rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction until the fourth mark on rear of camshaft sprocket is aligned with pointer on rear timing belt cover. Check and adjust valve clearance for No. 4 cylinder intake and No. 3 cylinder exhaust valves.
8. After completing adjustment, reinstall cylinder head cover.
