Timing Belt: Service and Repair
Whenever the timing belt has broken or slipped significantly, a possibility of internal engine damage is present.
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove drive belts from engine.
3. Remove crankshaft pulley attaching bolt, then remove pulley.
4. Remove timing belt cover, then loosen timing belt tensioner and remove timing belt.

INSTALLATION
Prior to timing belt installation, intermediate shaft cover to timing belt tensioner clearance should be checked to prevent movement of timing belt during tensioning. Using a suitable feeler gauge measure clearance. Clearance should be .004 inch. If necessary adjust by turning adjusting screw (K), Fig. 10.

2. Remove access plug from side of cylinder block and insert tool Mot. 861 or equivalent into slot on crankshaft throw, Fig. 12.
3. Loosen crankshaft tensioner bolts, then position tensioner pulley toward water pump and tighten bolts.

4. Install timing belt over sprockets, then loosen timing belt tensioner bolts. The timing belt should be tight at positions A and B, Fig. 13.
5. Tighten timing belt tension bolts, then position timing belt cover over sprockets.

7. Adjust timing belt tension as follows:
a. Remove tool No. Mot. 861 from cylinder block, then install access plug.
b. Rotate crankshaft two turns in clockwise direction.
c. Remove timing belt cover and loosen timing belt tensioner bolts approximately 1/4 turn.
d. Tighten the lower timing belt tensioner bolt, then the upper timing belt tensioner bolt.
e. Check timing belt tension using tool Ele. 346 or equivalent, Fig. 14. Timing belt deflection should be .216 to .276 inch.
f. Install timing belt cover.
8. Install crankshaft pulley. Prior to installation, apply Loctite 515 or equivalent to crankshaft pulley to sprocket mating surface. When tightening crankshaft pulley attaching bolt, use tool No. Mot. 582 or equivalent to hold flywheel in position.
9. Install drive belts.
10. Connect battery ground cable.
