When servicing a Premier equipped with a Vehicle Maintenance Monitor (VMM) refer to page 58 of the 1988 Electrical Troubleshooting Manual for information on the use of the diagnostic mode of the Vehicle Maintenance Monitor.
Please make a note on Page 58 of the ETM to refer to this bulletin when servicing the VMM.
TEST 9 - OIL LEVEL TEST
Place the monitor in the metric code by pressing the ENGLISH/METRIC button. Press and hold the CHECK and LIST buttons and turn the ignition switch to the RUN position to enter diagnostics. Hold the CHECK button and the monitor will progress through each of the diagnostic checks until it reaches the oil level test. The word OIL will flash in the display. Release the CHECK button and press and hold the LIST button until the word OIL flashes three (3) times, then release the LIST button and the word OIL will stop flashing. There will be a 30-45 second delay while the system is testing. Any oil level faults stored in the monitor memory will be displayed at this time. To resume testing press the check button.
ADDITIONS TO VMM SECTION IN THE ELECTRICAL TROUBLESHOOTING MANUAL:
To indicate a fault, the Vehicle Maintenance Monitor will display a message and will illuminate the corresponding portion of the vehicle located on the display.
If the VMM detects more than one fault, it will list the highest priority message first. It will then cycle through a list of all existing faults, and return to abbreviated message for the highest priority fault. All available VMM messages and their abbreviations are listed in order of priority on the following page.
DOOR AJAR (DOOR) -- The appropriate door(s) is illuminated on the vehicle outline. Close door(s) to reset.
BRAKE LAMP OUT (LAMP) -- Is activated when the brakes are applied and a bulb is burned out. To reset, replace bulb.
TAIL LAMP OUT (LAMP) -- Is activated when the tail lamps are on and a bulb is burned out. To reset, replace bulb.
COOLANT FLUID LOW (COOLANT) -- Add engine coolant as required to reset.
OIL LOW (OIL) -- Oil level is monitored 12 minutes after the ignition is turned off. After 3 consecutive detections of low oil, the message will be displayed. After adding oil, the display may be reset by pressing RESET button while the oil level message is displayed and holding the button until the beep is heard. The display will automatically reset after the VMM sees 3 correct oil level readings. It is important to remember that the vehicle must be turned OFF for 12 minutes to check oil level and the vehicle should be at operating temperature when it is turned off. This must happen 3 times consecutively to reset the display.
WASHER FLUID LOW (WASHER) -- Add windshield washer fluid as required to reset.
SERVICE TRANSMISSION (TRANS) -- Indicates fault in the automatic transmission of 4-cylinder vehicles.
PERFORM SERVICE (SERVICE) -- Is activated at 7,500 miles (12000 kms) intervals to indicate that regular service and maintenance is due. Perform required service then press RESET button until the sound of the beep to clear the display.
OIL SENSOR FAULT (SENSOR) -- See diagnostics section.
COOLANT SENSOR FAULT (SENSOR) -- See diagnostics section.
WASHER SENSOR FAULT (SENSOR) -- See diagnostics section.
MILES (KMS) TO SERVICE -- Indicates distance to the next scheduled service.
