Service Procedure
A. Replace PCV Harness:1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
2. Disconnect the PCV solenoid wiring connector. Tape the connector to the wiring harness as it will not be used with the new harness which contains an orifice.
3. Disconnect the PCV harness from the carburetor, evaporative canister, and decel valve (manual transmission equipped vehicles only) (Figure 1).
4. Remove the PCV harness from the engine.
5. Transfer the PCV valve from the removed harness to the supplied harness.
6. Install the supplied PCV harness, connecting the harness to the carburetor, evaporative canister, and decel valve (if equipped).
7. Insert the PCV valve into the front cylinder head cover grommet.
B. Adjust Idle Speeds:
1. Connect a tachometer to the ignition coil negative terminal.
2. Set the parking brake firmly. Place manual transmission in NEUTRAL.
3. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. The choke and intake manifold heater must be off before adjusting idle speeds.
4. Disconnect and plug the Sole-Vac actuator vacuum hose (Figure 2).
5. Disconnect the Sole-Vac holding solenoid wire connector (Figure 3).
6. Increase the engine speed to above 1200 RPM for 3 to 5 seconds and allow the engine to return to curb idle speed.
7. Using the curb (slow) idle speed adjustment screw, adjust the curb idle speed to 680 RPM (Figure 4).
8. Using a hand held vacuum pump, apply 10-15 in. Hg. (34-51 kPa) vacuum to the Sole-Vac actuator (Figure 5).
9. Increase the engine speed to above 1200 RPM for 3 to 5 seconds and allow the engine to return to idle.
10. With the Sole-Vac throttle positioner fully extended, set the idle speed to 1100 RPM using the vacuum actuator adjustment screw on the throttle lever (Figure 6).
11. Disconnect the vacuum source from the vacuum actuator.
12. Connect a jumper wire between the Sole-Vac holding solenoid wire connector and the battery positive terminal (Figure 7).
13. Open and release the throttle manually to allow the throttle positioner to fully extend.
NOTE:
Without vacuum applied to the vacuum actuator, the throttle must be opened manually to allow the Sole-Vac throttle positioner to be fully extended.
14. Adjust the holding solenoid idle speed to 900 RPM using the Sole-Vac throttle positioner hex-head adjustment screw (Figure 8).
15. Remove the jumper wire from the Sole-Vac holding solenoid wire. Reconnect the Sole-Vac holding solenoid wire connector.
16. Reconnect the Sole-Vac actuator vacuum hose.
17. Disconnect and plug the EGR valve vacuum hose.
18. Position the fast idle speed adjustment screw on the second highest step of the fast idle cam.
19. Adjust the fast idle speed to 1700 RPM (Figure 9).
20. Turn the engine off and disconnect the tachometer. Unplug and reconnect the EGR vacuum hose.
21. Reinstall the air cleaner assembly.
C. Install Recall Completion Label:
1. With a ball point pen, print your dealer code (5 digits) on the supplied Recall Completion Label.
2. Peel the label from its backing and apply it near the Vehicle Emission Control Information Label.
D. Complete Proof of Correction Form:
1. Complete a Vehicle Emission Recall Proof of Correction Form and supply it to the vehicle owner.
