On-Vehicle Testing
SOLENOID GROUND TEST
1. Connect one ohmmeter test probe to battery negative post and other probe to sheet metal adjacent to solenoid on manual transmission, or ground terminal on automatic transmission, and note resistance.
2. Move test probe to solenoid S terminal. If resistance increases by more than 5 ohms, check solenoid ground.
SOLENOID PULL-IN COIL WINDING TEST
1. Disconnect S terminal wire from solenoid.
2. Connect ohmmeter leads to S terminal and the mounting bracket on manual transmission, or ground terminal on automatic transmission.
3. If there is no continuity, replace solenoid.

STARTER MOTOR FULL LOAD CURRENT TEST
1. Ensure that battery is fully charged, then disconnect and ground ignition coil secondary wire.
2. Connect remote control starter switch between positive battery terminal and S terminal on starter.
3. Connect circuit tester, then actuate remote starter switch and note voltmeter reading. Note voltage after starter has reached maximum RPM.
4. Turn off remote starter switch, then turn load control knob clockwise until indicated voltage is exactly the same as when starter was running.
5. If ammeter does not read 180---220 amps, bench test starter.
