Secondary Ignition Tests

1. Disconnect coil wire from distributor cap and, using insulated pliers, hold wire approximately 1/2 inch from a good engine ground.
2. Crank engine and observe wire for spark. If no spark occurs, proceed to Step 5. If spark occurs, proceed to Step 3.
3. Reconnect coil wire to distributor cap. Remove wire from one spark plug.

CAUTION: Do not remove wires from spark plugs on cylinders 3 and 5 on 1979 six cylinder models or cylinders 1 and 5 on 1980-82 models. On eight cylinder models, do not remove spark plug wires from cylinders 3 and 4. Removing these wires during testing could result in sensor damage.

4. Using insulated pliers, hold wire approximately 1/2 inch from a good engine ground. Crank engine and observe wire for spark. If spark occurs, check for fuel system problems or incorrect ignition timing. If no spark occurs, check for defective distributor cap, rotor or spark plug wires.
5. If no spark occurs at coil wire, measure coil wire resistance. If resistance is greater than 10,000 ohms, replace wire.
6. If malfunction still exists, proceed to the following tests or diagnosis procedures.
