Theory of Operation

When powered, the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) monitors the bus continuously for an Instrument Cluster status message broadcast once every second and upon change. The Instrument Cluster broadcast message contains the status of the AIRBAG LAMP OK, OPEN or SHORT. The Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) expects this status message once every second and will set the DTC within one second if status message received is AIRBAG LAMP SHORT.

- When Monitored:
When powered, the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) monitors the bus continuously for an Instrument Cluster status message broadcast once every second and upon change.

- Set Condition:
The ORC will set this DTC within one second if the Instrument Cluster broadcast message status is OPEN.





Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. Restraints System Pre-Diagnostic Procedure.

1. DETERMINE ACTIVE OR STORED DTC

NOTE: Make sure that the battery is fully charged.

1. Turn the ignition on.
2. With the scan tool, read ORC DTC.

Select ACTIVE or STORED DTC:

ACTIVE DTC

- Go To 2

STORED DTC

- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM INTERMITTENT TEST. Restraints System Intermittent Test.

2. VERIFYING CLUSTER INDICATOR STATUS

NOTE: Diagnose and repair all active ORC codes before diagnosing stored codes. Testing and Inspection .

1. With the scan tool, select the MONITORS and read the AIRBAG INDICATOR STATUS (Short, Open, OK).
2. Turn the ignition off, wait 15 seconds, then turn the ignition on.
3. Observe the AIRBAG INDICATOR STATUS during the Cluster bulb check and for 10 seconds afterwards.

Does the scan tool display AIRBAG INDICATOR STATUS: OPEN?

Yes

- Replace the Cluster.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Body Verification Test.

No

- WARNING: If the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) is dropped at any time, it must be replaced. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
WARNING: Turn the ignition off disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

- Replace the ORC.
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Restraints System Verification Test.
