Theory of Operation

When powered, the Occupant Classification Module (OCM) broadcasts a status message on the Bus once every second. The Occupant Restraint controller (ORC) monitors the bus for the OCM messages. The ORC will set this DTC if the messages are not received.

- When Monitored:
With the ignition on.

- Set Condition:
The Occupant Classification Module (OCM) broadcasts a status message on the Bus once every second. The ORC will set this DTC if the OCM status message is not received for 10 consecutive seconds.





Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. Restraints System Pre-Diagnostic Procedure.

Diagnostic Test

1. DETERMINE ACTIVE OR STORED DTC
NOTE: Ensure that the battery is fully charged.

Turn the ignition on.
With the scan tool, read the ORC DTC.
Does the scan tool display an active: NO OCM MESSAGE DTC?

Yes

- Go To2

No

- Perform the *RESTRAINTS SYSTEM INTERMITTENT TEST. Restraints System Intermittent Test

2. VERIFY THAT THE OCM IS ACTIVE ON THE BUS
With the scan tool, attempt to communicate with the OCM.
Does the scan tool communicate with the OCM?

Yes

WARNING: If the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) is dropped at any time, it must be replaced. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment and serious or fatal injury.

WARNING: To avoid serious or fatal injury, turn the ignition off, disconnect the battery and wait two minutes before proceeding.

- Replace the ORC.
- Perform *RESTRAINT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Restraints System Verification Test

No

- Perform *NO RESPONSE FROM OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION MODULE (OCM). Refer to the No Response tests Communications - Verbose Codes
