Radiator: Service and Repair
RADIATORREMOVAL
WARNING: DO NOT OPEN THE RADIATOR DRAINCOCK WITH THE SYSTEM HOT AND UNDER PRESSURE BECAUSE SERIOUS BURNS FROM COOLANT CAN OCCUR.
NOTE: It is not necessary to discharge the air conditioning system to remove the radiator.
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Drain cooling system.
3. Disconnect the lower radiator hose at the radiator.
4. Remove the front lower fascia close out panel.
5. Remove the lower A/C condenser to radiator retaining bracket bolts.
6. Disconnect the coolant fan assembly electrical connector at the lower junction.
7. Disconnect the left charge air cooler hose at the charge air cooler.
8. Remove the PCM.
9. Lower the vehicle.
10. Remove the air cleaner housing.
11. Remove the A/C suction hose bracket from the front core support.
12. Remove both radiator hold down brackets.
13. Remove the upper A/C condenser to radiator mounting bolts.
14. Separate the engine wiring harness from the cooling fan bracket.
NOTE: Care should be taken not to damage the cooling fins and tubes during removal.
15. Remove the radiator and cooling fan assembly.
16. Separate the cooling fan assembly from the radiator.
CLEANING
Clean radiator fins are necessary for good heat transfer. The radiator and air conditioning fins should be cleaned when an accumulation of debris has occurred. With the engine cold, apply cold water and compressed air to the back (engine side) of the radiator to flush the radiator and/or A/C condenser of debris.
INSPECTION
Inspect the radiator tanks for cracks, broken or missing fittings also inspect the joint where the tanks seam up to the radiator core for signs of leakage and/or deteriorating seals.
Inspect radiator core for corroded, bent or missing cooling fins. Inspect the core for bent or damaged cooling tubes.
INSTALLATION
CAUTION: Care must be taken not to damage the cooling fins and tubes during installation.
NOTE: When lowering radiator, make sure lower radiator pins engage properly.
1. Mount cooling fan assembly to radiator, Tighten all radiator fan fasteners to 6 Nm (55 in. lbs.).
2. Position radiator into mounting position, connect engine wiring harness to cooling fan assembly, and fit condenser bracketing onto radiator.
3. Tighten condenser fasteners to 8 Nm (70 in. lbs.).
4. Install both upper radiator hold down brackets and tighten bolts to 8 Nm (70 in. lbs.).
5. Position A/C suction hose bracket and tighten bolt to 6 Nm (65 in. lbs.).
6. Raise vehicle on hoist.
7. Connect the coolant fan assembly electrical connector.
8. Connect lower radiator hose, align the hose and position the clamp so it will not interfere with other components.
9. Connect the radiator fan electrical connector.
10. Install PCM.
11. Install left lower charge air cooler hose at charge air cooler.
12. Tighten lower condenser fasteners to 8 Nm (70 in. lbs.).
13. Attach lower front fascia close out panel.
14. Lower vehicle.
15. Connect upper radiator hose, align the hose and clamp to prevent interference with the engine or hood.
16. Install air cleaner housing assembly.
17. Connect negative battery cable.
18. Fill cooling system with coolant.
19. Operate engine until it reaches normal operating temperature. Check cooling system for correct fluid level.
