Input Shaft: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

NOTE: If the input shaft splines or pilot bearing is damaged, the input shaft can be replaced separately. This condition will not require complete transmission disassemble. If the input shaft is damaged behind the seal, the transmission must be disassembled and inspected.

1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
2. Remove the drain plug and drain the transmission fluid.
3. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
4. Measure the end play on the output shaft before disassemble. Record this number.
5. Remove clutch slave cylinder from transmission adapter plate.

6. Remove front adapter plate bolts (Fig. 101).
7. Pry front cover adapter loose.

8. Hold input shaft while sliding front adapter off (Fig. 102).
9. Carefully remove seal from transmission adapter.
10. Clean and inspect all sealing surfaces for wear or damage.

11. Lift cluster shaft slightly and remove input shaft from transmission (Fig. 103).

INSTALLATION
1. Install new seal from the fluid side with Installer 6624 and Handle 4171. Drive seal into adapter plate until tool bottoms out.
2. Install new bearing onto new input shaft. Do not use old bearings.
3. Install new bearing cone in front adapter. Be sure to install original shim behind new bearing cone.
4. Clean sealing surfaces of the transmission case and adapter plate.
5. Install new input shaft and adapter plate (without any Mopar Gasket Maker).
6. Check output shaft end play. It should be the same as measured during the disassemble procedure. If end play is greater than original reading, install a thicker shim. If end play is less than original reading, install a thinner shim.
7. After the correct shim has been installed, remove the adapter plate and apply Mopar Gasket Maker to the sealing surfaces.
8. Install adapter and tighten adapter bolts to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.).
9. Install transmission into vehicle and fill with Mopers Synthetic Manual Trans Lubricant.
