Gauges Test

Use these tests to check the operation of the following gauges:
- Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge
- Engine Oil Pressure Gauge
- Fuel Gauge
- Voltmeter Gauge

CHECK FOR BATTERY VOLTAGE
1. Remove gauge and turn ignition switch to the ON position. Refer to Electrical, Instrument Cluster, Gauge, Removal, and Installation.

Fig. 3 Fuel Gauge:

Fig. 4 Voltmeter:

2. Using a voltmeter, test voltage between Pin 3 and Pin 4 (Fig. 1), (Fig. 2), (Fig. 3), and (Fig. 4).
3. If battery voltage is OK, replace meter. If not, check ignition wiring.

CHECK CONTINUITY FROM SENSOR TO GAUGE
Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge:
1. Ignition switch in the ON position, engine not running, disconnect temperature sensor and the engine coolant temperature gauge should read cold.
2. Ignition switch in the ON position, engine not running, ground Pin 1 and the engine coolant temperature gauge should read maximum temperature. If OK, test engine temperature sensor. If not OK, repair as necessary.

Engine Oil Pressure Gauge
1. Ignition switch in the ON position and the engine not running, the engine oil pressure gauge should read zero.
2. Ignition switch in the ON position, the engine not running, disconnect the oil pressure sensor and engine oil pressure gauge should read maximum oil pressure. If OK, test oil pressure sensor. If not OK, repair as necessary.

Fuel Gauge
1. Remove gauge.
2. Using ohmmeter, measure continuity at Pin 1 of the fuel gauge wire harness connector, with the ignition switch in the ON position and the engine not running.
3. Check ohms.
- Fuel tank FULL is 4 ohms.
- Fuel tank EMPTY is 107 ohms.
4. Refer to the obtained readings and estimate if gauge and reading are near each other. If fuel is added, the ohms will decease. If the reading shows that a improper signal is being sent from the fuel level sensor, it will need to be tested. Refer to Fuel System, Fuel Delivery, Fuel Level Sensor.

Voltmeter
1. Using a voltmeter, connect one lead to ground and other lead to Pin 3 of the gauge wire harness connector. Check generator output, refer to Electrical, Charging System.
2. Ignition switch in the ON position, and the engine not running, battery voltage should be present.
3. Ignition switch in the ON position and with the engine running, the generator output voltage should be more than battery voltage. If OK, test voltmeter. If not OK, check generator, if OK, repair circuit as necessary.
