Lower Control Arm
DESCRIPTIONThe rear lower control arm used on this vehicle is a high strength aluminum casting. The lower control arm has a bolted-on bracket for front shock absorber mounting. The bracket has an isolator bushing in it. The outer end of the lower control arm has a tapered hole to accept the tapered stud of the lower ball joint which is part of the rear knuckle. The lower control arm also has a tapered hole in it for attachment of the rear stabilizer bar link. A rubber isolator bushing is pressed into each inboard corner of the arm. Two cam-headed bolts pass through these bushings to attach the arm to the frame rail of the vehicle.
The replaceable components of the lower control arm are the isolator bushings and the shock absorber mounting bracket.
OPERATION
The lower control arm supports the lower end of the rear knuckle. Working in conjunction with the upper control arm, the lower control arm allows for the up and down movement of the front suspension during jounce and rebound travel.
The cam bolts which mount the lower control arm to the frame are used to make the camber and caster adjustments when performing a wheel alignment.
