Upper Control Arm

NOTE: Before proceeding, review all SERVICE WARNINGS AND CAUTIONS found under Suspension, Service Precautions.

REMOVAL
1. Raise vehicle. See Maintenance for the required lifting procedure.
2. Remove wheel and tire.

NOTE: Vehicles equipped with the ACR suspension package have special spacers, washers and mounting bolts at the lower and upper mounts. It is important that they are noted and not lost during removal and installation.

3. Remove the nut and bolt, mounting shock absorber to mounting bracket on lower control arm.

4. Remove the bolt and nut attaching the shock absorber to the frame bracket.
5. Using a pry bar, carefully push down on the Mopar control arm far enough to remove the top of the shock absorber from the frame bracket.

6. Remove shock absorber/coil spring assembly vehicle out through center of upper front control.

7. Remove the attaching bolt for the hub/bearing, mounting the brake flex hose bracket to the steering knuckle.

8. Remove the 2 bolts mounting the disc brake caliper to the steering knuckle.

9. Remove the brake caliper from the steering knuckle and rotor. Hang the brake caliper from the lower control arm using mechanics wire. Do not let the brake caliper hang by the brake flex hose.
10. Remove the brake rotor from the hub/bearing.

11. Remove the cotter pin and nut attaching the upper ball joint stud to the steering knuckle.

12. Install Remover, Special Tool C-4150A, on the steering knuckle. Special Tool C-4150A is to be installed so the ball on the bolt of the tool is centered on the end of the ball joint stud.

CAUTION: When separating the ball joint stud from the steering knuckle, do not strike or apply heat to the steering knuckle to help the stud separate from the steering knuckle.

13. Tighten bolt on Remover, Special Tool C-4150A, to apply pressure against the upper ball joint stud. This will separate the ball joint stud from the steering knuckle.

14. Remove the 2 nuts attaching the upper control arm pivot bar to the upper frame rail. Remove the upper control arm from the vehicle.

INSTALLATION

NOTE: When installing the upper control arm be sure the sport shims are in place between the pivot bar and the frame rail. One sport shim is to be installed on each pivot bar mounting stud.

CAUTION: When installing the upper control arm, the serrated area around the mounting stud holes in the pivot bar must be facing the frame.

1. Install the control arm pivot bar on the frame rail mounting studs. Install the pivot bar mounting stud nuts. Torque the upper control arm pivot bar mounting nuts to 210 Nm (155 ft. lbs.).
2. Install the upper ball joint stud into the steering knuckle. Install the upper ball joint stud, to steering knuckle attaching nut. Torque ball joint stud to steering knuckle nut to 102 Nm (75 ft. lbs.). Install the upper ball joint attaching nut cotter pin. Align the cotter pin hole in the attaching nut and ball joint stud only by tightening the attaching nut (DO NOT LOOSEN IT).
3. Install the brake rotor on front hub and bearing assembly.
4. Install disc brake caliper on steering knuckle. Align caliper mounting holes with threaded holes in steering knuckle. Install the 2 bolts attaching the caliper to the steering knuckle. Tighten both mounting bolts to a torque of 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.).
5. Align brake hose bracket with hole in steering knuckle. Install the hub/bearing assembly attaching bolt. Tighten the hub/bearing attaching bolt to a torque of 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.).

NOTE: Vehicles equipped with the ACR suspension package have special spacers, washers and mounting bolts at the lower and upper shock mounts. It is important that they are noted and not lost during removal and installation.

6. On ACR vehicles, install the spacers on each side of the lower and upper mounting shock eyes.
7. Install shock absorber/coil spring assembly on vehicle through center of upper control arm.
8. Install the shock absorber bushing into the mounting bracket on lower control arm. Install the shock absorber to bracket bolt. On ACR vehicles, remember to install the special washers on both sides of the mount before installing the bolt. Do not tighten the mounting bolt at this time.
9. Using a pry bar, carefully push down on the upper control arm far enough to install the top of the shock absorber in the frame bracket.
10. Install the shock absorber to frame bracket bolt. On ACR vehicles, remember to install the special washers on both sides of the mount before installing the bolt. Do not tighten the mounting bolt at this time.
11. Install the wheel and tire.
12. Tighten the wheel mounting stud nuts in proper sequence until all nuts are torqued to half specification. Then repeat the tightening sequence to the full specified torque of 122 Nm (90 ft. lbs.).
13. Lower the vehicle to ground level.
14. Position vehicle on an alignment rack or drive-on hoist.
15. Ballast the vehicle to the correct design height. Refer to Design Height Measurement found in Wheels, Tires and Alignment, Alignment, Adjustments.
16. Tighten the shock absorber upper and lower mounting bolts to a torque of 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.).
