Upper Control Arm
DESCRIPTIONThe front upper control arm used on this vehicle is an aluminum casting. It contains the front upper ball joint, which is threaded into the outer end of the control arm. A pivot bar spans between the inboard corners of the arm. The pivot bar attaches through two isolator bushings that are pressed into the control arm.
The upper control arm is attached to the front steering knuckle through a tapered stud which is part of the upper ball joint. The upper control arm is mounted to the frame through the pivot bar.
There are sport shims located on the arm mounting studs between the upper control arm pivot bar and the frame of the vehicle.
The replaceable components of the upper control arm are the isolator bushings and the ball joint seal.
OPERATION
The upper control arm supports the upper end of the steering knuckle through the use of an upper ball joint. Working in conjunction with the lower control arm, the upper control arm allows for the up and down movement of the front suspension during jounce and rebound travel.
The sport shims located between the upper control arm pivot bar and the frame of the vehicle are there for vehicle sporting event use. Removal of the shims will reset the camber angle of the front suspension more negative, thus improving vehicle handling for such events without disturbing the normal alignment setting cams of the front suspension. Refer to Wheels. Tires and Alignment, Alignment for further information on sport shims.
