Rear
NOTE: Before proceeding with this procedure, review all Service Warnings And Cautions found under Service Precautions.REMOVAL
1. Raise vehicle. See Hoisting in Maintenance for the required lifting procedure.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly from the vehicle.
CAUTION: Do not attempt to press the caliper piston back into the bore at this time. A special procedure and service tool are required to do this. If the required procedure is not used to press the piston back into the bore, the caliper will be destroyed. Refer to the Disc Brake Shoe Installation procedure below for the proper procedure.
3. Using a hammer and pin punch, tap the retaining pin for the brake pads out of the caliper.
WARNING: HOLD ANTI-RATTLE SPRING IN PLACE WHILE REMOVING BRAKE PAD RETAINING PIN FROM CALIPER. IF ANTI-RATTLE SPRING IS NOT HELD IN PLACE DURING REMOVAL OF RETAINING PIN, ANTI-RATTLE SPRING MAY FLY OFF CALIPER CAUSING INJURY.
4. Remove the brake shoe retaining pin and the anti-rattle spring from the caliper assembly. Check the condition of the snap ring on the retaining pin. Replace retaining pin if corroded, or the snap ring is worn or damaged.
5. Slide outboard brake shoe toward the rear of the vehicle until brake shoe clears top of caliper. Then lift the brake shoe out from between the caliper and outboard side of rotor.
6. Slide inboard brake shoe toward rear of vehicle until it clears the top of the caliper assembly. Then lift the brake shoe up and out between the caliper assembly and inboard side of rotor.
NOTE: The rear brake rotor can be removed from the vehicle without requiring removal of the disc brake caliper from the knuckle.
7. If the brake rotor needs to be removed as well perform the following:
a) Place a chalk mark on the rotor and a wheel mounting stud. This is so the rotor can be reinstalled in the same location on the hub.
b) Remove the rotor from the hub by sliding it off wheel mounting studs and removing it out from the disc brake caliper.
INSTALLATION
CAUTION: The rear caliper piston must be seated (bottomed) to compensate for new brake lining. However, because the parking brake self-adjuster mechanism is attached to the piston, a different seating method is required. The only acceptable method, is by rotating the piston back into the bore with Spanner, Special Tool 6366 as described below. Any other seating method will damage the self-adjuster mechanism.
1. Seat (bottom) the caliper piston in the bore as follows:
a) Assemble a 3/8 drive ratchet handle and 7/16 deep-well socket.
b) Insert Spanner, Special Tool 6366 into the deep well socket.
c) Insert lugs on Spanner, Special Tool 6366 into matching holes in face of caliper piston .
d) Rotate the piston in a clockwise direction until fully seated (bottomed) in the bore. Then remove the piston rotating tools.
NOTE: A lot of force is required to be exerted against the piston while using the spanner tool to start the process of piston retraction.
2. If the brake rotor has been removed, align marked rotor hole with marked wheel mounting stud in hub and bearing assembly. Then install rotor on hub and bearing assembly.
NOTE: The rear disc brake shoes are interchangeable to the inboard or outboard side of the rotor. If new brake shoe assemblies are installed, either shoe assembly can be used on the inboard or outboard position on the caliper. If the original brake shoe assemblies are being installed, they should be replaced in the original position.
3. Install the inboard brake shoe into the caliper.
4. Install the outboard brake shoe assembly into the caliper.
WARNING: HOLD ANTI-RATTLE SPRING IN PLACE WHILE INSTALLING BRAKE SHOE RETAINING PIN INTO CALIPER. IF ANTI-RATTLE SPRING IS NOT HELD IN PLACE DURING INSTALLATION OF RETAINING PIN, ANTI-RATTLE SPRING MAY FLY OFF CALIPER CAUSING POSSIBLE INJURY.
5. Install anti-rattle clip into caliper. Be sure anti-rattle clip is positioned correctly between brake shoe assemblies and caliper assembly. Install brake shoe assembly retaining pin into caliper assembly from outboard side, until small end of retaining pin is in inboard side of caliper assembly. When installing retaining pin be sure it passes through the loops in the anti-rattle spring.
6. Using a pin drift, drive brake shoe assembly retaining pin into caliper assembly. Be sure it is fully seated and retaining pin snap ring is seated in outboard side of caliper. Refer to figure to ensure that the rear caliper brake shoes and components are correctly installed.
7. Install the wheel and tire assemblies. Tighten the wheel mounting stud nuts in proper sequence until all nuts are torqued to half specification. Then repeat the tightening sequence to the full specified torque of 122 Nm (90 ft. lbs.).
8. Lower vehicle.
9. Apply the brakes several times to seat the brake shoes and equalize parking brake adjustment.
NOTE: Before vehicle is moved after any brake service work, be sure to obtain a firm brake pedal.
10. Road test the vehicle and make several stops to wear off any foreign material on the brakes and to seat the brake shoe linings. See Brake Shoe Burnishing in Brake Pad, Service and Repair, Service procedures if NEW brake shoes were installed.
