Camshaft

REMOVAL - ENGINE REMOVED FROM VEHICLE
1. Remove intake manifold, cylinder head covers, cylinder heads, timing chain case cover and timing chain.
2. Remove rocker arm assemblies.
3. Remove push rods and tappets; identify so each part will be replaced in its original location.

Camshaft Thrust Plate:

4. Remove camshaft thrust plate.

Camshaft And Sprocket Assembly:

5. Install a long 7/16-14 bolt into front of camshaft to facilitate removal of the camshaft; remove camshaft, being careful not to damage bearing surface with the cam lobes.

INSTALLATION
1. Install a long 7/16-14 bolt into front of camshaft to facilitate installation.
2. Lubricate camshaft lobes and camshaft bearing journals and insert the camshaft in cylinder block.
3. Install camshaft thrust plate with two screws. Tighten to 24 Nm (210 inch lbs.).
4. Place both camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket on the bench with timing marks on exact imaginary center line through both camshaft and crankshaft bores.
5. Place timing chain around both sprockets.
6. Turn crankshaft and camshaft to line up with keyway location on crankshaft sprocket and on camshaft sprocket.
7. Lift camshaft sprocket and chain, keeping the sprockets tight against the chain.

Alignment Of Timing Marks:

8. Install timing chain around crankshaft sprocket and place cam sprocket into position on camshaft. Use a straightedge to check alignment of timing marks.
9. Install the camshaft bolt. Tighten bolt to 74.5 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
10. Rotate crankshaft 2 revolutions. Timing marks should line up. If timing marks do not line up, remove cam sprocket and realign.
11. Measure camshaft end play. End Play should measure 0.0127-0.381 mm (0.005-0.015 inch) 0.381 mm (0.015 inch Max.). If not within limits install a new thrust plate.
12. Each hydraulic tappet reused must be installed in the same position from which it was removed with alignment dot facing up. When camshaft is replaced, all of the tappets must be replaced.
