P0801A Reverse Lock-Out Circuit Open or Short (Non OBD II)

NAME OF CODE
P0801 ($C4) Reverse Gear Lockout Circuit Open or Shorted

WHEN MONITORED
With the engine at operating temperature, RPM above 608 and vehicle speed above 5 MPH.

SET CONDITION
The Reverse Gear Lockout Solenoid Control circuit is not in the expected state when requested to operate by the Powertrain Control Module.

THEORY OF OPERATION
The Reverse Gear Lockout Solenoid prevents the operator from shifting into reverse when the vehicle speed is greater than 5 MPH. When the vehicle speed is less than 5 MPH the PCM provides a ground for the solenoid which energizes the solenoid to allow shifting into reverse. When vehicle speed is greater than 5 MPH the ground is removed which deactivates the solenoid and prevents the transmission from being shifted into reverse.

POSSIBLE CAUSES
- Open fused ignition switch output circuit
- Open or shorted solenoid control circuit
- Powertrain control module failure
- Connector terminals
- Connector wires
