BORG WARNER T-56 TRANSMISSION
The T-56 transmission has an aluminum exterior case and six forward gear ratios. All gears including reverse are synchronized. The transmission weighs 61.3 kg (135 pounds) with the bell housing attached. It has a torque capacity of 657 Nm (485 ft. lbs.).
The gear ratios are as follows:
- First Gear: 2.66
- Second Gear: 1.78
- Third Gear: 1.30
- Fourth Gear: 1.00
- Fifth Gear: 0.74
- Sixth Gear: 0.50
- Reverse Gear: 2.90
RECOMMENDED LUBRICANT
The T-56 transmission uses a special type of lubricant called Dexron III. This new fluid can withstand higher temperatures than standard Dexron II, Men con or Mopar 7176 fluid. The use of standard Dexron II, Mercon or Mopar 7176 automatic transmission fluid is not recommended. This is because of the high temperature encountered within the transmission.
Hypoid gear lube is not to be used in this transmission. Use of hypoid gear lube will cause hard shifting effort and/or transmission failure.
