Wiper Switch: Testing and Inspection

Perform the diagnosis for the wiper and/or washer system before testing the multi-function switch.

WARNING: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AIR-BAGS, REFER TO AIR BAGS AND SEAT BELTS/AIR BAGS BEFORE ATTEMPTING STEERING WHEEL, STEERING COLUMN, OR INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPONENT DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. FAILURE TO TAKE THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIR-BAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY.

1. Disconnect and isolate the battery jump start attachment.
2. Disconnect the multi-function switch connector.

Multi Function Switch Continuity:

3. Using an ohmmeter, perform the switch continuity checks at the switch terminals as shown in the chart.
4. If the switch fails any of the continuity checks, replace the faulty switch.

Wiper Switch To Motor Connector Test
1. Remove both wiper arms before starting test. Refer to Wiper Arm Replacement for installation.
2. Turn ignition switch OFF and disconnect both viper motor connectors.
3. Using an voltmeter, check the driver/passenger wiper motor connector between terminals 5 and 6 for battery voltage. Turn ignition switch to RUN position and the wiper switch to the position as indicated in the following steps. Start with wiper switch in the OFF position:
a. To check the Low mode:
- Connect an voltmeter between terminals 6 and 10
- Turn wiper switch to the LO position
- Check for battery voltage
If battery voltage, go to step b. If not, repair as necessary.
b. To check the intermittent mode, turn wiper switch to the intermittent position. It may take as long as 20 seconds for voltage to register on the meter. If battery voltage OK, go to step c. If not OK, repair as necessary
c. To check the washer switch mode, press washer switch. If battery voltage OK, go to step d. If not OK, repair as necessary.
d. To check the High mode, connect the voltmeter between terminals 6 and 9 and check for battery voltage. Turn the wiper switch to the HI position. If battery voltage OK, perform the Wiper Motor Test. If not OK, repair wiring as necessary 4. If necessary, repeat the above procedure on the other motor wiper motor connector.

Wiring Test
Using an ohmmeter, test wires from the control module to the wiper motors and/or wiper switch assembly. If not OK, repair as necessary. If OK, perform the Wiper Switch Test.
