Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair
REMOVAL1. Raise vehicle on hoist and remove side sill panel (rocker panel cover). Apply penetrating oil to band clamps of component being removed.
2. Catalytic converter, resonator/intermediate pipe, and rear muffler are three separate parts of the exhaust system. Remove bolts at exhaust manifold flange, and discard gasket.
3. Remove support from exhaust pipe in front of converter.
4. Loosen band clamp at rear of converter.
5. Remove exhaust pipe and converter assembly.
NOTE: When replacement is required on any component of the exhaust system, it is most important that original equipment parts be used to insure proper alignment with other parts in the system. Provide acceptable exhaust noise levels and does not change exhaust system back pressure that could affect emissions and performance.
INSTALLATION
1. Install converter into resonator/intermediate pipe. Do not tighten band clamp to permit alignment of all parts.
2. Install new flange gasket at exhaust manifold.
3. Beginning at the flange gasket, align and torque bolts to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.).
4. Working from the front of system, align each component to maintain position and proper clearance with body parts.
5. Tighten exhaust pipe support to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.).
6. Tighten band clamp to 70 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
7. Install sill panel (rocker panel cover) and lower vehicle.
