Differential Assembly: Description and Operation

GENERAL INFORMATION
The Dodge Viper is equipped with an all aluminum Dana (Model 44) rear axle. The final drive ratio is 3.07. All rear axles are equipped with a TRAC-LOK (clutch type) limited slip differential.

The axle is equipped with a special high strength ring and pinion. Should service ever be required, use-only parts that are equal in quality to the original parts. Failure to do so could result in premature axle failure.

VEHICLE STORAGE/PROLONGED NON-OPERATION
If the vehicle has not been operated on a regular basis, it is recommended that the drivetrain be rotated. This should be done at least once every two weeks. The vehicle should be moved far enough to cause the drivetrain components to make several complete revolutions. This procedure will help assure that all internal components receive adequate amounts of lubrication. This will reduce deterioration caused by an undesirable environment (e.g. high humidity).

RECOMMENDED LUBRICANT
All Vipers are equipped with a limited slip differential. Mopar (R) Hypoid Gear Additive should be added if the fluid was replaced.

The lubricants recommended for this differential is Mopar (R) High Performance Synthetic Axle Lube SAE 75 W/140 (MS-8985). A container of Mopar (R) Gear Additive (friction modifier) should also be added after a lubricant change.

The rear axle on this vehicle receives limited amounts of air flow for cooling. Temperatures within the axle can reach as high as 300°F. (149°C.). Only synthetic axle lube provides optimum protection and durability under extreme temperatures. The use of petroleum based axle lubricants may break down under these conditions.

WARNING: The use of petroleum based rear axle lubricants may cause premature axle failure.

The lubricant should be drained and refilled every 22,500 miles under normal use and 9000 miles under severe use.

LUBRICANT LEVEL
Differential housing lubricant level checks are recommended at every 12 months/7500 miles or each engine oil change.

The lubricant should be drained and refilled every 22,500 miles under normal use and 9000 miles under severe use.

The rear axle fluid capacity is 45 fluid ounces. This includes four ounces of friction modifier.

CAUTION: If the rear axle has been submerged in water, the axle lubricant must be checked for water contamination immediately. Water contaminated lubricant could cause premature axle failure.

The lubricant level should be checked with the vehicle in a level position. The lubricant level should not be lower than 6.4 mm (1/4 inch) below the fill hole.

Do not overfill the differential. This can cause the lubricant to foam and/or overheat.
