Removal
1. Remove the center cap from the rear wheel.2. Remove the cotter pin, nut lock and spring washer from the axle yoke.
3. With the weight of the vehicle supported by the tires and the parking brake applied, loosen but do not remove the yoke to hub/bearing mounting nut.
4. Raise vehicle on jackstands or centered on a frame contact type hoist.
5. Remove rear wheel and tire assemblies.
6. Remove the shock absorber from the vehicle.
NOTE: Axle shaft removal is required to allow the use of the special tool required to remove the upper control arm ball joint from the steering knuckle.
7. Remove the driveshaft from the side of the vehicle requiring removal of the upper control arm.
8. Remove the nut and washer mounting the yoke to the hub/bearing.
9. The yoke should be removable from the hub/ bearing by pulling it out the rear of the hub/bearing by hand. If yoke will not come out of the hub/bearing pulling on it by hand, use Puller, Special Tool CT-1003, or equivalent to push the yoke out of the hub/ bearing.
10. Remove the driveshaft yoke from the back side of the rear hub/bearing assembly.
11. Remove the tie wrap attaching the park brake cable to the rear knuckle.
12. Remove the cotter pin and castle nut attaching the upper control arm ball joint to the knuckle.
13. Install Adapter, Special Tool, 6962, or equivalent on top of the lower ball joint.
CAUTION: Do not strike or apply heat to the knuckle when removing the ball joint stud from the knuckle. Apply force to the upper ball joint stud using only the special tools, until the stud separates from the knuckle.
14. Install Puller, Special Tool 6961, between Adapter, Special Tool 6962, or equivalents and the stud of the upper ball joint. Hold hex portion of Puller, Special Tool 6961, or equivalent while turning the bolt to apply pressure against the stud of the upper ball joint. Continue applying pressure until the upper ball joint stud separates from the steering knuckle.
15. Remove the 2 bolts and nuts attaching the rear upper control arm to the mounting brackets.
16. Remove the control arm from the vehicle.
