Horn: Description and Operation

INTRODUCTION

Horn System - Schematic:

The horn circuit consists of a horn switch, horn relay, and horns. The horn circuit feed is from fuse 3 in the Power Distribution Center (PDC). When the horn switch contact is depressed, it completes the ground circuit to the horn relay. Then the horn relay coil, closing a set of contacts in the relay allowing current to flow to the horns. The horn is grounded to the headlamp ground.

Horn Location:

The horns are located under the front bumper and fascia. Mounted on the right and left outer side of the frame rails.

SYSTEM OPERATION

Horn Switch:

Horn Switch
The horn switch is mounted between the outer and inner cover of the Driver Airbag Module. When the Driver Airbag is pressed the horn switch makes contact to ground. The ground signal is carried to the horn relay and the horn sounds.

CIRCUIT OPERATION
The horn system is powered by a 15 amp fuse located in cavity 3 of the Power Distribution Center (PDC) which is HOT at all times on circuit F31. This circuit supplies voltage to the coil and contact sides of the horn relay.

When the operator presses the horn switch, a ground path is completed on the coil side of the horn relay through the switch. The horn relay, located in the PDC, then CLOSES the relay contacts. Voltage is passed through the closed relay contacts on circuit X2 to the horns.

Grounding for the horns is on the Z1 circuit.

The X3 circuit is also double crimped and connects to the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) module.

When the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) module determines the horn portion of the alarm should be sounded it supplied a ground path for circuit X3. This circuit connects to the coil side of the horn relay located in the Power Distribution Center (PDC).

The ground path on the X3 circuit causes the contacts in the relay to CLOSE connecting circuits F31 and X2. The F31 circuit is protected by a 15 amp fuse located in cavity 3 of the PDC. Circuit X2 connects from the relay to the horns.
