Removal and Installation

NOTE: The transmission can be removed from the vehicle without having to remove the engine. The transmission unbolts from the bell housing.

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery power source.
2. Lift vehicle on hoist.
3. Remove under body stone shield.
4. Remove drive shaft.
5. Disconnect hydraulic clutch quick connector at the transmission bell housing. Use special tool 6638, or equivalent to disconnect.
6. Install a screw-type support stand underneath engine oil pan.
7. Raise the engine/transmission slightly with support stand. Remove the transmission crossmember and mount bolts/nuts.
8. Slightly lower engine/transmission with sup port stand. Do not allow the engine/transmission assembly to hang freely.
9. Using a crow-foot wrench, unscrew the isolator/ shifter handle from the shifter tower.
10. Disconnect speed sensor, reverse lamp switch and skip shift solenoid main connector at left side frame rail. Disconnect reverse lamp switch connector on the right side of the transmission.
11. Remove upper transmission to bell housing bolts.
12. Raise engine/transmission.
13. Remove bottom transmission bolts.
14. Raise engine up slightly to aid in transmission removal/installation.
15. Slide transmission back so that the input shaft clears bell housing. Then lower transmission.

INSTALLATION
1. To install transmission, reverse removal procedure. The hydraulic clutch must be bled before driving vehicle.
2. The drive shaft strap bolts use a Loctite patch for retention on initial installation. These screws must be replaced with new pieces whenever they are removed.
3. Replace drive shaft joint straps whenever they are removed. The straps slightly deform when torqued in place. Reuse of the straps may result in reduced clamp load on the universal joint cap.
