Input Shaft

NOTES:
^ If the input shaft splines or pilot bearing is damaged, the input shaft can be replaced separately. This condition will not require complete transmission disassemble.

^ If the input shaft is damaged behind the seal, the transmission will have to be completely disassembled and inspected.

DISASSEMBLY
1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
2. Drain the transmission fluid.
3. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
4. Measure the end play on the output shaft before disassemble. Record this number.
5. Remove clutch slave cylinder from transmission adapter plate.

6. Remove front adapter
7. Pry front cover adapter loose.

8. Hold input shaft while sliding front adapter off.

9. Lift cluster shaft slightly and remove input shaft from transmission.

ASSEMBLY
1. Install new bearing onto new input shaft. Do not attempt to reuse old bearings.
2. Install new bearing cone in front adapter. Be sure to install original shim behind new bearing cone.
3. Clean sealing surfaces of the transmission case and adapter plate.
4. Install new input shaft and adapter plate (without any Mopar (R) Gasket Maker).
5. Check output shaft end play. It should be the same as in Step 4 of the disassemble procedure. If end play is greater than original reading, install a thicker shim. If end play is less than original reading, install a thinner shim.
6. After the correct shim has been installed, remove the adapter plate and apply Mopar (R) Gasket Maker to the sealing surfaces. Then reassemble the transmission.
7. Install transmission into vehicle and fill with Dexron II-E transmission fluid.

CAUTION:
^ The drive shaft strap bolts use a Loctite patch for retention on initial installation. These screws must be replaced with new pieces whenever they are removed.

^ Replace drive shaft joint straps whenever they are removed. The straps slightly deform when torqued in place. Reuse of the straps may result in reduced clamp load on the universal joint cap.
