NO: 06-02-96GROUP: Clutch
DATE: Nov. 15, 1996
SUBJECT:
Driveline Clunk During Acceleration And Deceleration
MODELS:
1996 - (SR) Viper
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VIPER GTS VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO AUGUST 8, 1996 (MDH 08-08-XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Excessive driveline clunk, due to driveline backlash, may be noticeable while accelerating and decelerating. The driveline clunk may be more noticeable in 5th and 6th gear.
Some driveline backlash is normal. Clearances in the driveline such as gear lash in the rear axle and end play in the transmission are incorporated into the design for component durability. There will always be a slight amount of backlash noise. No attempts should be made to disassemble the transmission for this condition.
WARNING:
NO ATTEMPTS SHOULD BE MADE TO TIGHTEN THE CLEARANCES BETWEEN THE DRIVELINE COMPONENTS.
NOTE:
WHILE THIS REPAIR IS HELPFUL IN REDUCING DRIVE LINE CLUNK, IT HAS ALSO, IN SOME CASES, INCREASED OR CREATED NEUTRAL GEAR IDLE RATTLE. PLEASE INFORM THE OWNER OF THIS POSSIBLE CONDITION BEFORE BEGINNING THE REPAIR.**
DIAGNOSIS:
Road test the vehicle driving in 5th or 6th gear, determine if a driveline clunk can be felt while accelerating or decelerating, if found proceed to the Repair Procedure.
