Throttle Cable - Lurching/Idle Undershoot/Noise

Throttle Cable Adjustment Procedure

MODELS:

1992-1996 (SR) Viper

DISCUSSION:

The throttle cables should be adjusted whenever the throttle body is removed, wide open throttle cannot be attained and/or the throttle body on the left does not open just before the right. In addition, the customer complaints listed below may be corrected by performing the throttle cable adjustment procedure.

^ Poor low speed driveability (lurching on launch).

^ Idle undershoot when coming to a stop.

^ Drive line clunk while accelerating and decelerating (low-speed operation).

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 4883371AA Screw Package

THROTTLE CABLE ADJUSTMENT:

IMPORTANT:
BOTH CABLES MUST BE ADJUSTED AT THE SAME TIME.





1. Push the button in on the throttle cable ratchet. while holding the button in, pull the cable REARWARD until it stops. Repeat for both adjusters. See Figure 1

2. Enlarge the pilot hole on the button to .116" (7/64 drill bit), being careful not to let the drill bit extended more than a 1/4" into the ratchet assembly.

3. Push the accelerator pedal to the floor. The ratchet will click while self-adjusting to the proper position.

4. Check the throttle cable adjustment. Lightly depress the accelerator pedal (just off idle). The throttle body on the left should open just before the right. If not, depress the right side button and pull the throttle cable shaft 2 mm (1/16 in) forward. Release the button and recheck. - Repeat this step until the throttle body on the left opens just before the right.

5. Install the screw and washer provided in Service Kit (P/N 4883371) in the pilot hole enlarged in step 2. Hand tighten with a nut driver to 2 in lbs torque. (do not over tighten).

6. Check to make sure the throttle cables operate properly.

a) wide-open throttle.

b) Left side lead.

c) Throttle opens and closes smoothly.
