Instrument Panel Backlight Flickers
MODELS:
1996 (SR) Viper
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VIPER GTS COUPES.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Flickering of the instrument panel backlighting. The flicker is most noticeable during night driving with the dimmer set to 1A, but can also be clearly seen with the car inside a garage or service bay.
DIAGNOSIS:
With the vehicle in a service bay, rev the engine and watch for fluctuations of the instrument panel backlighting, if seen perform the Repair Procedure. The flicker can be intermittent so it is recommended that if the customer has described the above condition the Repair Procedure should be performed.
PARTS REQUIRED:
1 05245299AB Dimmer Switch Module
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves the replacement of the panel dimmer switch module.
CAUTION:
DURING THIS PROCEDURE CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN TO AVOID SCRATCHING/DAMAGING THE INSTRUMENT PANEL.
1. Record the preset radio stations.
2. Position the vehicle on a hoist and lift.
3. Remove the left rear tire/wheel assembly.
4. Remove the negative battery cable.
5. Remove the left knee blocker by removing the six screws.
6. From behind the dimmer switch, gently push the switch out and disconnect the wiring. Discard the old switch.
7. Connect the new dimmer switch module to the wiring and insert into instrument panel. Care should be taken to insure the wiring is not pinched.
8. Push the switch into the instrument panel bezel until it is fully seated. The switch will be flush against the bezel with no gaps.
9. Hold the knee blocker in position and install the six screws.
10. Install the negative battery cable.
11. Install the left rear tire/wheel assembly.
12. Lower the vehicle and program the radio presets recorded in step 1.
13. Test the system as described in the Diagnostic Procedures above. If the condition is not repaired, refer to the Panel Dimmer Switch Diagnosis found in the 1996 Viper Coupe Service Manual (81-270-6151) on page 8E-6.
