Fuel Gauge: Description and Operation
CIRCUIT OPERATIONPower for the fuel gauge is supplied on circuit G5. This circuit is spliced and supplies power to all the gauges. Ground for the fuel gauge is provided on circuit Z1.
The fuel level gauge is connected to the fuel pump module on the G4 circuit. The fuel pump module contains the fuel pump and a variable resistor for the gauge.
The fuel gauge contains a pair of coils and a indicator needle. As current flows, on circuit G5, through coils in the fuel gauge it creates a magnetic field in the gauge. The magnetic field controls the position of the fuel gauge pointer
The fuel level sensor contains a variable resistor. As the position of the float arm on the level sensor changes, the resistor changes the current flow through the fuel gauge circuit to ground on circuit Z1. A change in current flow alters the magnetic field in the fuel gauge which changes the pointer position.
