Removal and Installation


The content of this article reflects changes called for in TSB 26-09-96.






CYLINDER HEADS
The alloy aluminum cylinder heads shown are held in place by 12 1/2 inch bolts and 8 1/4 inch bolts. The spark plugs are located in peak of the chamber between the valves.

REMOVAL

1. Drain cooling system refer to Cooling System for procedure and disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Remove intake manifold, and throttle body assemblies. Refer to Exhaust System and Intake Manifold.
3. Remove thermostat housing from rear of cylinder heads.
4. Disconnect coil wires, sending unit wire, heater hoses and by-pass hose.
5. Remove closed ventilation system, evaporation control system and cylinder head covers.
6. Remove coolant tubes from engine.
7. Remove exhaust manifold heat shields and remove exhaust manifolds.
8. Remove rocker arm and pedestal assemblies. Remove push rods and identify to insure installation in original locations.






9. Remove the 12 head bolts and 8 valley seal bolts from each cylinder head and remove cylinder heads.

CAUTION: This is a combined total dimension of stock removal from cylinder head surface.


INSTALLATION

1. Clean all surfaces of cylinder block and cylinder heads.






2. Install new gaskets on cylinder block.






3. Tighten the cylinder head bolts 1 thru 12 in sequence, 2 Step Torque Sequence:

- First to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).

- Second to 122 NM (90 ft.lbs.).

4. Tighten valley bolts A thru h in sequence to 11 Nm ( 95 in. lbs.) after head bolts 1 thru 12 have been tighten to specifications.
5. Inspect push rods and replace worn or bent rods.






6. Install push rods, rocker arm and pedestal assemblies into position, tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).

7. Place new cylinder head cover gaskets in position and install cylinder head covers. Tighten to 11 Nm (95in. lbs.).
