Cylinder Block Assembly: Testing and Inspection


CLEANING AND INSPECTION

1. Clean cylinder block thoroughly and check all core hole plugs for evidence of leaking.
2. If new core plugs are installed, see Engine Core Oil and Cam Plugs. (freeze plugs).
3. Examine block for cracks or fractures.


CYLINDER BORE INSPECTION







The cylinder walls should be checked for out-of-round and taper with Tool C-119. If the cylinder walls are badly scuffed or scored, the cylinder liner assembly with piston and rings fitted should be installed.






Measure the cylinder bore at three levels in directions A and B. Top measurement should be 12 mm (.50 inch) down and bottom measurement should be 12 mm (.50 inch.) up from bottom of bore. Refer to specifications.

CYLINDER BLOCK CLEANING


CAUTION: Remove all gasket material from cylinder block using a plastic gasket scraper and Mopar Gasket Remover this will prevent damage to the cylinder block.

1. Clean the cylinder liner seat. Remove all deposits from the seat and from the water jacket walls of the cylinder liner.
2. When cleaning the cylinder block, remove the oil galley plugs at the front and rear of the block.
3. Remove coolant plugs on the sides of the block.
4. Spray compressed air into all oil galley passages to ensure they are clear of blockage.
5. Use a gasket removal compound to soften the old gasket material. Use a wooden or plastic scraper to remove the old gasket.
6. Use fine grade Scotch Brite or equivalent to remove any small amounts of gasket material.
7. Clean the oil passages in the crankshaft with a brush.
