Vehicle Theft Security System - Malfunction: Overview

NO: 08-17-97

GROUP: Electrical

DATE: Apr. 25, 1997

SUBJECT:
Vehicle Theft Security System - Diagnosis And Repair

MODELS:
1996 (SR) Viper Coupe

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Customers may experience one or all of the following symptoms related to the vehicle security system (electronic entry module):

^ The alarm system does not arm (set) properly.

^ The status LED (light) on the dash does not come on.

^ The alarm system once set, goes off without apparent reason.

^ Battery Drain

Any of the above symptoms can be intermittent.

DIAGNOSIS:

If any of the above symptoms have been experienced, the vehicle security system should be placed in the diagnostic mode. To enter the diagnostic mode without the DRB III, cycle the ignition key from off to the accessory position 4 times, then leave the key in the accessory position.

NOTE:
IF THE VEHICLE SECURITY SYSTEM WILL NOT GO INTO THE DIAGNOSTIC MODE, THE ELECTRONIC ENTRY MODULE SHOULD BE DIAGNOSED USING THE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES OUTLINED IN THE 1996 VIPER COUPE BODY DIAGNOSTIC MANUAL (PUBLICATION NO. 81-699-96029), BEGINNING ON PAGE 65.

When the vehicle is in the diagnostic mode, the parking and tail lamps should begin to flash and the horn will sound twice. Return the ignition to the OFF position, this will stop the lamps from flashing and keep the entry system in the diagnostic mode.

During each of the following actions a horn chirp should occur:

NOTE:
ALLOW AT LEAST ONE-SECOND INTERVAL BETWEEN EACH OPENING AND CLOSING.

^ Open and close each door.

^ Open and close the hood.

^ Open and close the rear hatch.

^ Press the lock and unlock button simultaneously to verify FOB synchronization.

^ Press the lock and unlock button on the FOB transmitter.

The lack of a horn chirp during any operation indicates either of the following:

^ A switch failure or improper switch adjustment.

^ The lack of input to the vehicle theft security system module.

^ An internal module failure.

^ Turn the ignition to the RUN position. A single horn chirp will identify proper operation of the ignition input. This will also take the entry module out of the diagnostic mode.

NOTE:
IF THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (JTEC) HAS BEEN REPLACED, THE SYSTEM WILL NOT OPERATE UNTIL 20 ENGINE STARTS HAVE OCCURRED.

The vehicle security system may not recognize a switch activation due to mis-adjustment. The procedure to adjust the hood switch and the rear glass strut switch is provided in the Repair Procedure of this Technical Service Bulletin. All other diagnostic can be found in the 1996 Viper Coupe Body Diagnostic Manual (Publication No. 81-699-96029), beginning on page 138.
