Vehicle Security System Malfunctions
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves replacing the underhood security switch and bracket. Then installing a jumper harness and rerouting the underhood security switch wiring.
MODELS:
1996 (SR) Viper
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The vehicle security alarm system may fail to arm properly, go off without an apparent reason or cause the battery to go dead. These symptoms may be due to the underhood security switch location.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
THIS REPAIR IS COMPATIBLE WITH DAIMLERCHRYSLER'S MOBILE SERVICE PROGRAM AND DOES NOT REQUIRE HOISTS OR OTHER FULL SERVICE FACILITY SPECIAL EQUIPMENT.
1. Open hood, disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the two support bracket mounting bolts. Remove the bracket to gain access to the switch. Remove the underhood security switch from the bracket and discard.
3. Install the existing underhood support bracket using the two mounting bolts removed in step 2.
4. Cut the female underhood security switch connector from the headlamp and dash harness.
5. Splice the brown w/tan wire from the new underhood security switch jumper p/n 05014021AA to the brown w/tan (circuit G70) wire of the headlamp and dash harness. Refer to the wiring splice procedure in the 1998 Viper Service Manual (Publication No. 81-270-8150) on page 8W-01-10.
6. Splice the black wire from the new underhood security switch jumper, p/n 05014021AA to the black wire (circuit Z1) of the headlamp and dash harness. Refer to the wiring splice procedure in the 1998 Viper Service Manual (Publication No. 81-270-8150) on page 8W-01-10.
7. To reroute the underhood security switch harness, start at the old switch location and go behind the outboard hood hinge. Move the wire underneath the right mounting bolts of the hood hinge to the forward most mounting bolt of the hood hinge (Figure 1).
8. Remove the forward most mounting bolt and the support bolt. Set the new underhood security switch bracket 04848283AC in place (Figure 2).
9. Position the slotted end of the new bracket in line to the opening on the right hand side of the radiator.
10. Torque the bolts to 28 Nm (250 in lbs).
11. Run the jumper harness up through the switch mount hole in the new bracket and connect to the new switch (Figure 2).
12. Install the new switch into the bracket.
13. Connect the negative battery cable and test the system by closing the hood, set the alarm and wait for the set mode. Open the hood, the alarm should sound.
