Vehicle Theft Security System
The Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) monitors the vehicle doors, hood, ignition switch and courtesy light to protect against vehicle theft. When an unauthorized entry is detected, the system responds by sounding the horn, flashing the park and tail lamps and sends a message to the powertrain control module (via the CCD bus) that it is not OK to start. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) then zeros the pulse width to the fuel injectors after the engine has been started, thus shutting down the engine (start and stall condition).When the alarm is tripped, the lights will flash and the horn will sound for three minutes and then rearm if the cause for tripping has been rectified. If not, the horn will sound for three minutes and the lights will flash for approximately fifteen minutes and the engine will not start until the system is disarmed. The system can only be armed or disarmed by the RKE transmitter.
Arming can occur by pressing the lock button on the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter when all doors and hood are closed, courtesy lamp is off and ignition is in the off position. The indicator in the instrument cluster will flash for 15 seconds showing that arming is in progress. If no monitored systems are activated during this process, the system will arm and the indicator lamp will stop flashing.
FUNCTIONAL OPERATION
The system consists of a VTSS module, an RKE module, an indicator lamp in the center of the instrument cluster, a hood switch, door latch switches (in place of door ajar switches), horn, horn relay, park and tail lamps and the ignition switch. On this vehicle the trunk key cylinder sense circuit is run directly to ground. The VTSS module supplies bias for the CCD bus and the powertrain control module supplies termination.
Tamper Alert - If the horn sounds three times when either front door is opened or courtesy lamp is turned on, it means the alarm was activated. The DRB can be used to tell what input last triggered the alarm. This feature of the DRB can be very useful when diagnosing an alarm that goes off intermittently.
System Initialization - To prevent the alarm from arming during the assembly process, an initialization procedure is included in the VTSS system. The system is disabled until the vehicle PCM has recorded 20 engine starts. Therefore, the VTSS system will not be functional on all vehicles and will require dealer verification.
To verify the system, proceed as follows;
1. Remove the ignition key.
2. Close all doors and hood.
3. Set the alarm by pressing the lock button on the RKE transmitter.
NOTE: If the VTSS indicator lamp flashed, the system is operational. If not, 20 engine starts have not occurred, or there is a problem with the system.
Power Up Alarm Mode - When the battery is disconnected, then reconnected or discharged, then charged, or the VTSS module is disconnected and then reconnected, the VTSS enters its power up alarm mode that:
- flashes the park and tail lamps
- prevents the engine from running
To exit this mode, the system must be disarmed by using the RKE transmitter.
