Compressor HVAC: Service and Repair
If the compressor unit is to be removed for service to other components such as the cylinder head, alternator or engine, it is not necessary to discharge refrigerant from the A/C system. Only the compressor mounts must be disconnected in order to reposition the unit to provide working clearance. However, if service will include compressor replacement, it will be necessary to properly discharge all refrigerant from the system prior to disconnecting refrigerant lines.
1. Using an A/C recovery unit, remove all refrigerant from A/C system.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Loosen and remove drive belt, then disconnect compressor clutch wire lead.
4. Remove refrigerant lines from compressor.
5. Remove compressor attaching bolts.
6. Remove compressor.
7. Reverse procedure to install.
