Airbag Module Deployment
Fig. 3 Disconnecting Diagnostic Unit Connector:
NOTE: Since there is a loud noise when airbag is deployed, give warning to anyone standing nearby prior to deploying an airbag.
Deployment Inside Vehicle
1. Move vehicle to an open area out of the wind.
2. Open all windows and doors on vehicle.
3. Disconnect battery cables then remove battery from vehicle. Wait 2 minutes after disconnecting the battery before proceeding with this procedure.
4. Remove rear console assembly.
5. Use a screwdriver to push in the lock spring of the lock lever on the SRS control unit to unlock the lock lever.
Fig. 1 Supplemental Restraint System Diagnosis Unit:
6. Disconnect the clockspring connector from the SRS control unit while pushing down the lock on the connector.
7. Connect two wires, each 20 feet or more long, to the two leads of the SRS airbag adapter tool No. MB686560, and cover connections with tape. Twist other end of wires together to prevent an unexpected deployment of air bag.
8. Connect SRS airbag adapter harness to clockspring connector and run leads out of vehicle.
9. Before deploying airbag module, ensure there is no one in or near the vehicle. The inflator will be quite hot immediately following deployment, allow 30 minutes before continuing servicing vehicle.
10. At a location as far away as possible, disconnect the two wires from each other and connect them to the battery terminals to deploy airbag.
Deployment Outside Vehicle
1. Park vehicle out of wind on level surface with no person or obstacle within 20 feet.
2. Disarm airbag as outlined under "Maintenance Procedures/Arming & Disarming Airbag System."
3. Remove airbag module as outlined under "Replacement and Repair Procedures/Airbag Module."
4. Connect two wires, each 20 feet or more long to the two leads of the SRS airbag adapter tool No. MB628919, and cover connections with tape. Twist other end of wires together to prevent an unexpected deployment of air bag.

5. Install a discarded nut to each of the four bolts on the back of the module and connect thick wires to these bolts.
6. Pass adapter harness through a used tire and wheel and connect the harness to the airbag module. Using wires connected to bolts on module, secure airbag module to wheel and tire assembly keeping module pointed upward.

7. Stack three used tires, with no rims, over airbag module.

8. Before deploying airbag module, ensure no one is near the module. The inflator will be quite hot immediately following deployment, allow 30 minutes before disposing of module.
9. At a location as far away as possible, disconnect two wires from each other and connect them to battery terminals to deploy airbag.
