Oil Pump: Service and Repair

NOTE: Oil pan must be removed prior to removing oil pump.
1. Remove accessory drive belt ass outlined under ``Drive Belts.''
2. Remove timing belt as outlined under ``Timing Belt, Replace,'' then the crankshaft pulley.
3. Remove oil pan.
4. Remove five retaining bolts holding oil pump to block., and remove pump rear cover (bolt inside crankcase).
5. Check pump condition and perform checks shown.
6. Install pump with proper length bolts in correct position and torque to specifications.
Inspection
1. Measure the following oil pump clearances:

a. Endplay should be 0.0010-0.0035 in.
Fig. 46 Measuring Oil Pump Outer Rotor Thickness:
b. Outer rotor specifications. Thickness should be 0.9435 inch minimum and 2.469 inch minimum diameter. Install outer rotor with chamfered edge in pump body.

c. Clearance between rotors should be 0.008 inch maximum.
Fig. 48 Measuring Oil Pump Outer Rotor Clearance:
d. Outer rotor clearance should be 0.014 inch maximum.
Fig. 49 Measuring Oil Pump Cover Clearance:
e. Oil pump cover clearance should be 0.003 in maximum.
f. Oil pressure relief valve spring free length should be 1.95 in.
