Fuel Pump: Service and Repair

High Pressure Elecric Fuel Pump:





REMOVAL

Fuel Pump Access Cover:





1. Remove the fuel pump access cover.

Fuel Pump Harness Connector Location:





2. Disconnect the fuel pump harness connector.
3. START and run the engine until it stalls, then turn the ignition switch to OFF.
4. Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
5. Remove the fuel tank cap.
6. Drain the fuel.

High Pressure Fuel Hose Connector Location:





7. Disconnect the fuel high pressure hose.
CAUTION: Cover with a shop towel to avoid gasoline spillage from any residual fuel in the line.
8. Remove the fuel pump installation screws, and remove the pump from the tank.

INSTALLATION

Fuel Pump Alignment Pins:





1. Install the gasket, taking care to properly align it with the three positioning projections.
2. As the fuel pump is re-installed, align the three positioning projections with the holes in the fuel pump. Care should be taken at this time to insure that the gasket is properly seated. Torque the mounting bolts to 2-3 lb-ft (1.4-2.2 Nm).
3. Reconnect the fuel high pressure hose, and torque the fitting to 25 lb-ft (35 Nm).

Access Cover Sealant:





4. Using an appropriate sealant replace the access cover.
5. Return sufficient fuel to the tank to operate the system. Check for fuel leaks.
