Ignition Timing: Adjustments

ADJUSTMENT CONDITIONS:
Coolant temperature, 185°F-205°F.
All lights and accessories OFF.
Transmission, N (Neutral).
Parking Brake, ON.
1. Connect a suitable tachometer and timing light.
2. START the engine and allow it to run at curb idle speed, 700 rpm ± 100 rpm.

Diagnostic Terminal:

3. If checking the base timing at high altitude (3,900 ft. above sea level), or higher, stop the engine, and disconnect the water-proof female connector from the ignition timing connector. Connect a jumper wire from the ignition timing adjusting terminal to ground.
4. Check the base timing, and adjust if necessary to 10° ± 2° Before Top Dead Center (BTDC).

Distributor Hold Down:

5. To adjust the base timing loosen the distributor hold down nut, and rotate the distributor to the desired reading. Tighten the hold down nut securely after adjustment.
6. At high altitude, STOP the engine, remove the jumper wire, and reconnect the timing adjustment terminal. START the engine and verify high altitude timing is at 15° BTDC. If not repeat the adjustment procedure.
