Installation Procedure
Notice: Head gaskets are specific for right hand and left hand applications, and also must be installed with the correct side facing up. Note the markings (1) on the head gaskets for proper installation. Failure to do so may lead to engine damage.
1. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.
2. Install the spark plugs to the cylinder head.
3. Install the cylinder head locator dowel pins, if necessary.
4. Inspect the cylinder head locator dowel pins for proper installation.
5. Install a NEW cylinder head gasket.
6. Install the cylinder head onto the locator pins and the engine.
Notice: This component uses torque-to-yield bolts. When servicing this component do not reuse the bolts, New torque-to-yield bolts must be installed. Reusing used torque-to-yield bolts will not provide proper bolt torque and clamp load. Failure to install NEW torque-to-yield bolts may lead to engine damage.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
7. Install the NEW cylinder head bolts and tighten in sequence.
Tighten
7.1. Tighten the cylinder head bolts a first pass in sequence to 60 Nm (44 lb ft).
7.2. Tighten the cylinder head bolts a final pass in sequence to 140 degrees using the J 45059.
8. Install the oil level indicator tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator Tube Replacement Service and Repair.
9. Install the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Left Side Service and Repair.
10. Install the lower intake manifold. Refer to Lower Intake Manifold Replacement Service and Repair.
11. Fill the engine with oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement Service and Repair.
12. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling Service and Repair.
13. Inspect for leaks.
