Leaf Spring Replacement

Removal Procedure
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Support the rear axle independently in order to relieve the tension on the leaf springs.
3. Remove the trailer hitch, if equipped.
4. Remove the fuel tank for left side applications. Refer to the appropriate procedure:
^ Fuel Tank Replacement for the 4.3L engine
^ Fuel Tank Replacement (Pickup) Fuel Tank Replacement (1500 Crew Cab) Fuel Tank Replacement (Cab/Chassis - Front) Fuel Tank Replacement (Cab/Chassis - Rear) for the 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L engines
^ Fuel Tank Replacement (Pickup) Fuel Tank Replacement (Cab/Chassis - Front) Fuel Tank Replacement (Cab/Chassis - Rear) for the 6.6L (LLY) engine
^ Fuel Tank Replacement (Pickup) Fuel Tank Replacement (Cab/Chassis - Front) Fuel Tank Replacement (Cab/Chassis - Rear) for the 8.1L engine





5. Remove the U-bolt nuts.
6. Remove the U-bolts.
7. Remove the spring spacer.
8. Remove the anchor plate.





9. Remove the rear spring hanger bracket nut and bolt.





10. Remove the front spring bracket bolt.
11. Remove the leaf spring assembly from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the leaf spring assembly to the vehicle.
2. Install the front spring hanger bracket bolt.
3. Install the front spring hanger bracket nut.





4. Install the rear spring hanger bracket bolt.
5. Install the rear spring hanger bracket nut.





6. Important:
Do not reuse the U-bolts.

Install the spring spacer.
7. Install the U-bolts.
8. Install the anchor plate.

9. Notice:
Refer to Fastener Notice.

Install the U-bolt nuts.
^ For 15 series, tighten the U-bolt nuts to 72 Nm (53 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the front hanger bracket nut to 150 Nm (110 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the rear hanger bracket nut to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.).
10. Install the fuel tank for left side applications. Refer to the appropriate procedure:
^ Fuel Tank Replacement for the 4.3L engine
^ Fuel Tank Replacement (Pickup) Fuel Tank Replacement (1500 Crew Cab) Fuel Tank Replacement (Cab/Chassis - Front) Fuel Tank Replacement (Cab/Chassis - Rear) for the 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L engines
^ Fuel Tank Replacement (Pickup) Fuel Tank Replacement (Cab/Chassis - Front) Fuel Tank Replacement (Cab/Chassis - Rear) for the 6.6L (LLY) engine
^ Fuel Tank Replacement (Pickup) Fuel Tank Replacement (Cab/Chassis - Front) Fuel Tank Replacement (Cab/Chassis - Rear) for the 8.1L engine
11. Install the trailer hitch, if equipped.
12. Remove the rear axle support.
13. Lower the vehicle.
